Video: Mark Beaumont –
he’s finished!
Yesterday,
honorary CTC member Mark Beaumont finished his epic ride across the Americas,
which took him across the longest contiguous mountain range in the world.
Having clocked up over 13,000 miles since leaving Alaska in May last year, he
arrived in Ushuaia, capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, at
3pm yesterday. His
latest video diary clip – filmed when he had just 170 miles to go – shows
Mark enjoying the sunset and views of the ocean. |

Round the world
cyclists celebrate solar power success
British
environmental campaigners Susie Wheeldon and Jamie Vining today completed the
13,500 mile round-the-world trip they’ve been undertaking over the past nine
months. The pair aimed to raise money for SolarAid
and highlight the importance of solar power as part of the world’s energy
future; and used solar-powered devices to navigate their way through 14
countries. The kit was powered by thin-film solar panels attached to their
panniers. Find out more about their trip in the SolarCycle Diaries. |

Mail tells cyclists to
get off their bikes
Petronella
Wyatt sparked controversy in last
weekend’s Mail on Sunday, with an anti-cycling article calling for
cyclists to ‘get off their bikes’. We posted the story on our Facebook and
Twitter pages and had a huge response from cyclists unimpressed by
statistical inaccuracies in the article. Ms Wyatt claims that half the
collisions between bicycles and cars are the fault of the cyclist, but
according to CTC’s Campaigns Director Roger Geffen: “a recent TRL
report actually shows the police allocated blame entirely to the driver
in over 60% of collisions with adult cyclists”. The Mail have now disabled
comments on the article, but if you want to make your thoughts known, Dave
Hill has quoted Ms Wyatt in his London
Blog on the Guardian website, where comments are being accepted. |

Not cycling to work is
too much hassle
If
you have been tempted to leave your bike at home in the cold weather and
drive to work instead, you should read CTC’s Victoria
Hazael’s blog in Guardian. It’s about her experience of not cycling to
work for a month and the effect on her health. You can read more about the health benefits
of cycling to work on CTC’s website. |

Plain sailing for
cyclists
When
a CTC member returning from a cycle holiday in Spain was told she could not
book herself and her bike onto the Brittany Ferries service back from
Santander, the first thing she did was to call CTC. CTC’s Public Transport Adviser Dave
Holladay got straight in touch with the company, and discovered that it
was all down to a software hiccough due to a new ship on the route. Thanks to
Dave’s intervention, Brittany Ferries are now working to ensure that cyclists
can make online bookings for all the facilities that are available to foot or
car passengers – see
CTC Forum for more details. In the meantime cyclists are advised to book
via Britanny Ferries’ call centre. |

15km time trial. All events are open to any recumbents and any other
land-based human powered vehicle. To find out more, and see photos, videos
and results from last year’s events, visit the World

Work on cycling
superhighways begins
Work
has begun on London’s first two
Cycle Superhighways. The two pilot routes, part of 12 planned Cycle
Superhighways in London, run from Merton to the City via the A24 and A3, and
Barking to Tower Gateway via the A13 and Cable Street. Resurfacing work began
this week near Westferry DLR station, and Transport for London will soon be
trialling new continuous cycle lanes through three junctions on the Merton to
City route. CTC has expressed
concern over the plans in the past and will be monitoring whether the new
infrastructure does adequately address safety issues on the pilot routes,
which should be completed by summer. |

Institute of Advanced
Motorists questionnaire
The
Institute of Advanced Motorists is running an online survey on attitudes to cycling.
While some CTC members may disagree with the wording in some of the multiple
choice answers to the questions, we’re keen to make sure cyclists’ views are
represented in the survey, and it only takes a few moments to fill in. The
questionnaire closes on 10 March. |

separate rooms) on CTC’s only hotel-based holiday to Germany this year,
departing 19 June for the Mosel and Rheinland. The tour will follow three
river valleys through picture postcard countryside, and will also pass
through France and Luxembourg. For more information or to book your place see
the CTC Holidays website. |

Adventure
Cycling
Over
the last 35 years, our friends at Adventure Cycling Association have created
the Adventure Cycling
Bicycle Route Network, containing 38,158 miles of prime cycling routes in
the USA. These routes follow some of the most quiet, scenic roads and bike
trails in the North America. The bike maps are built for cyclists and
are some of the finest you'll find anywhere. Maps include information not
available on typical road maps designed for motorists, for example, the
locations of bike shops, sources for food and water, and listings of
overnight accommodation (especially camping facilities and motels). For more
information is available on Adventure
Cycling’s website. |
