Ironing out the kinks
of bikes on trams
This
morning, cyclists in Manchester took ironing boards on board trams to
highlight the fact that Metro Link have banned travelling with a folding
bicycle. The protest has been organised to coincide with the Greater
Manchester Integrated Transport Authority committee meeting this lunchtime.
It is hoped that councillors will admit that folded bicycles are no more
dangerous than folded prams, trolleys or ironing boards, all of which are
allowed, and overturn the bike ban. The protest is part of Friends of the
Earth’s Love your bike
campaign. |

Put a velodrome in
your pocket
A
16-year-old schoolboy from Halifax has become the first ever teenager to have
a design on a British coin, after winning a Royal Mint competition to create
an Olympic
cycling themed 50 pence piece. Designer Theo Crutchley-Mack – a member of
two local cycling clubs – said the thought of his design being in the back
pockets of millions of people is “absolutely amazing”. Look out for the coin,
which features a track cyclist racing in a velodrome, in your change from
September this year. |

sets off to cycle the Six Nations
The
Dallaglio Cycle Slam, in
which Rugby World Cup winner and former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio
will ride 2800km from Rome to Edinburgh during the Six Nations Championship,
sets off today. He’ll pass through all of the Six Nations countries, taking
in every international rugby stadium along the way, and finish in Murrayfield
in time for the Scotland v England match on 13 March. The aim is to raise
£1m, which will be split between Sport
Relief and the Dallaglio
Foundation. |

Right to Ride along
the seafront
CTC campaigners in
North Wales have been making
waves in the local press over the right to ride along the promenade on
Llandudno North Shore. Cycling along the promenade is currently banned, and
Conwy County Council have put forward a proposal for a new cycle route which
will link the existing cycle path on the North Shore with the West
Shore by diverting cyclists away from the seafront. Roy Spilsbury of CTC Cymru says the proposed route
would be a misuse of public funding and detract attention from where cycle
access is most needed: along the promenade, which is wide enough for everyone
to share in safety. |

Fill That Hole – with
some flowers
An
Oxford artist has been highlighting the problem of potholes on Britain’s
roads by planting brightly coloured primroses and heather in them. Graphic
design student Pete Dungey says he started ‘Pothole Gardens’, part of a
project called ‘Subvert the Familiar’, not only to gain the attention of the
local council, but also to highlight the state of the roads around the
country. Other cyclists are welcome to join in – Pete invites you to send him
photos of pothole gardens via
his website. And if you do, don’t forget to log the pothole on CTC’s
website Fill That Hole, so that
the local highway authority can get it fixed. |

underwater
The
London School of Diving are challenging diving fans to cycle an underwater
mile on what is thought to be the world’s first underwater
turbo training cycle. Contestants are judged on speed measured by a
waterproof odometer, their cycling style, and how much air they use. The

You wooden believe it:
cut out bike wins design award
While
it won’t be winning any races, this flat pack bike
has been awarded 2nd place in this year’s L’Argus design competition, the
theme of which was: ‘Less is more: getting around in the era of simplicity’.
The ‘Roll’ bike, which can be cut out and assembled from a flat piece of
plywood, was designed by Nicolas Belly, a Product Design student at French
academy Creasud Bordeaux. |
