Cycling to school
makes you much fitter
A
study of 6,000 schoolchildren in the east of England was published
in the American College of Sports Medicine. It provides evidence that
10-16 year old boys who cycle regularly to school are 30% more likely to meet
recommended fitness levels, while girls who cycle are 7 times more likely to
do so. Those who cycled travelled an average of 1.5 miles, while half of
those who were taken to school by car were making journeys of fewer than 2
miles. CTC will use this evidence to help convince the Department of Health
that encouraging children and teenagers to cycle could play a major role in
meeting the government’s physical activity targets. |

Video: Who is liable
for bike v car smashes?
The
UK is just one of four Western European countries (the others are Ireland,
Cyprus and Malta) that don’t have some form of 'no fault
liability' rules, whereby injured pedestrians and cyclists are
assumed to be entitled to compensation from drivers who hit them, unless it
is obvious that the victim caused the collision by acting illegally or
irresponsibly. To find out more, watch this video from our friends at

New legislation
forcing developers to provide better cycle facilities?
In
the last of a series of three
lectures organised by the Campaign for Better Transport outlining the
major parties’ policies on transport, the Liberal Democrat spokesman Norman
Baker MP gave strong support to cycling, including promising new legislation
to obtain better cycling facilities in new developments. In the debate that
followed, Steven Norris, erstwhile transport minister and chair of the
National Cycling Strategy Board, stated his strong support for a big increase
in fuel duty as one of the easiest ways to achieve increases in sustainable
travel. |

Cyclists welcome new
speed limit in Dublin city centre
Cyclists
have welcomed the extension to the 30km/h speed limit which came into force
in Dublin city centre this week. Dublin Cycling Campaign say
the reduction in the speed limit will not only help to make the area safer
for all road users, it will also make it more attractive for pedestrians and
cyclists, as the zone contains most of Dublin’s bike sharing stations.
Meanwhile in London this week, Westminster Council rejected calls for 20mph
speed limits. Find out more about the benefits of 20mph speed limits on the campaigns
section of our website. |

CTC member Chris
Davies: ‘Britain’s 900,000-mile man’
Founding
member of Audax UK, Chris Davies – also known as ‘CCP of CTC’ – gets a
write-up in Cycling
Weekly this week. The 72-year old reached the 900,000 mile mark last year
and has now racked up 906,900 miles in total on his bike. He’s been logging
his mileage since 1950, noting every mile ridden on his Hobbs racing bike in
an old school exercise book. Now he uses a speedometer to count the miles,
but he’s still on the same bike! |

to the weather conditions this winter, road salt stocks are running low in

Video: Fearne falls
off her bike
As
David Walliams and his celeb friends get ready for their End to End cycle
ride for Sport
Relief, his team member Fearne Cotton’s got off to bad start by falling
off her bike. On
her blog she says: “I unintentionally dismounted (fell off) twice, and
David got four punctures in 90 minutes which I believe is a world record. We
look the part in our red shiny jackets and fancy cycling shoes but are
generally terrible at cycling. I’m more than nervous about this challenge
looming.” To watch Fearne cycling scroll

Wear your umbrella
Ever
needed an umbrella while you cycle? The Nubrella is a bizarre invention for
cyclists that is a sort of umbrella you wear. I suspect it will be hard to
look over your shoulders while cycling, but the main reason I’ve put it in
Newsnet is to assure you, in comparison you really don’t look that odd
in your waterproof
cycling clothes! |
