What do I need?
- A roadworthy bike
If you haven’t used your bike for some time it may be worth getting it looked at by a bike shop. A basic service (tyres, brakes, gears etc.) should cost about £30-35
- Pump, spare inner tube, puncture repair kit
Leaders will carry tyre levers and some basic tools but won’t necessarily have a spare inner to fit your bike!
- Comfortable clothing (inc. waterproofs)
Wear loose, comfortable trousers or shorts (not jeans). Cycling shorts are not essential but can make the experience more comfortable! A fluorescent vest is useful, but if you don’t have one then a bright top is a good alternative
- Food and water and money to buy snacks
Lunch will be in a café or pub. If you don’t want to buy lunch bring something to eat and we will stop somewhere on route. Other breaks may be in a café or pub, or we may find a picnic spot so bring some snacks to keep you going
It is also important to make sure you have enough water. About a litre should be enough – more if it’s a hot day
Safe cycling in a group
- Follow the Highway Code; signal clearly; do not ride more than two abreast; and do not break formation down hill, especially in traffic
- Please follow your leader's instructions
- When approaching obstructions warn cyclists behind by calling 'on the left' (or right as required)
- Warn cyclists in front of you of traffic from behind, especially on quiet roads, by calling ‘car up’
- Warn cyclist behind you of oncoming traffic by calling ‘car down’
- If you pass the leader on a hill, wait at the top or first junction
